TEXAS ORGANIZING PROJECT SEEKS
COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS

For Dallas County

Position: Working under the supervision of the TOP Field Coordinator the Community Organizer will be directly responsible for developing relationships with community members and civic leaders to establish an active group of neighborhood residents who can effectively advocate for neighborhood issues, local politics, and effective policy reforms in Dallas County and across Texas. Currently Dallas TOP is working to stop the pipeline to prison from DISD schools and to secure neighborhoods improvements.  TOP members are driving strategic issue campaigns statewide to get Governor Rick Perry to expand health coverage through Medicaid and to win a comprehensive immigration reform package.

Job Responsibilities:

• Build a community led membership base
• Identify and develop grassroots leaders through ongoing training
• Organize events including neighborhood meetings, press conferences, town halls, and forums on at least a monthly basis
• Working with the Field Coordinator, help develop a comprehensive strategy to advance campaign goals
• Conduct grassroots lobbying activities including petition drives, letter writing campaigns and meetings with local elected officials
• Work closely with Field Coordinator, maintain regular communications with the community
• Help develop and execute neighborhood organizing plans; map out key community and constituent targets; and identify and implement effective strategies to engage impacted communities
• Prepare written reports and compile statistical data as required

Requirements:

• Commitment to social justice
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
• Ability to work well with all religious, cultural, ethnic and social groups
• Willingness to work long and often irregular hours including evenings and weekends;
• Fulltime access to a car
• Bilingual in both Spanish and English strongly preferred
• Computer competency – Word, Internet required; Experience in working with database systems a plus
