Local 615

Bilingual Senior Organizer (Merrimack Valley)
SEIU 615 is the property service union for New England with over 18,000 janitors, security officers, maintenance and skilled trades workers, landscapers, and window washers. Our mission is to unite workers in our industry and to build a movement which leads to a just and humane society where all workers and their families live and work in dignity.
We are looking for an experienced, bilingual (Spanish/English—Portuguese a plus) senior organizer to help Local 615’s members (predominantly low-income and immigrant service workers) build power and win changes in their worksites, industries, and communities. This position will be primarily focused on working with the Local’s membership in the Lawrence/Lowell region of Massachusetts and in southern New Hampshire.
The senior organizer will agitate and support union members to improve their lives by participating in campaigns ranging from fights for better working conditions in a given worksite to national issues like immigration reform. The senior organizer’s key mission, working in concert with other organizers, is to identify, recruit, and develop new member leaders who in turn organize and mobilize their co-workers. As a senior organizer, you may also be asked to provide support or mentorship, and coordination on specific campaigns or assignments, to other organizers. A typical day might involve any or all of: facilitating a small team meeting; analyzing reports of member activity; a relational 1:1 meeting with a promising potential member leader; helping member leaders plan and carry out a fightback against worksite abuses; visiting a worksite to hear members’ concerns and mobilize them for an upcoming union event; and playing a leadership role in a delegation, picket or march.
A senior organizer must have good judgment; great initiative, persistence and patience; and the ability to build trust. The position will require Spanish and English, driving to assignments, travel out of state occasionally as needed, and long and irregular hours. Organizing experience strongly preferred.
Competitive salary, excellent benefits.
