SEIU-USWW

Multi-Service Division – Coordinator

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Organize Sub-Contracted Workers in California Hospitals

Job Description

The Service Employees International Union is the nation’s fastest growing labor organization with over 2 million members. SEIU is on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage and immigrant workers and engaging in larger social issues such as health care, housing, and immigration.

The Property Services Division of SEIU is home to the “Multi-Service” campaign to organize contracted workers in hospitals, universities, stadiums & more, as well as Airport Workers United, Justice for Janitors and Stand for Security campaigns. These campaigns are all part of exciting national drives to empower workers to organize and improve conditions as well as win better pay, health insurance, and full-time work.

The Multi-Service Division at USWW led the Clean Up Sodexo! campaign in California and is currently organizing thousands of contracted food and cleaning workers in California’s largest hospitals. SEIU USWW has a position available immediately for a Coordinator, based in Los Angeles.

Multi-Service workers are so named because they work for enormous multi-national companies like Sodexo who are the face of global outsourcing.  The Coordinator will lead non-union organizing, bargaining and representation for the division in coordination with the national multi-service campaign, reporting to the Multi-Service Division Director. Non-Union workers in the industry include housekeepers, cooks, cashiers and other food service workers. The workforce is racially diverse and includes many new immigrants. This position will focus on building a strong base of worker power in California.

Experience and Requirements
• Prior experience planning and leading staff to execute election and card-check campaigns.
• Prior experience supervising teams of staff and member organizers in a variety of settings.
• Prior experience developing staff to conduct house visits, identify leaders, build committees and lead fights.
• Prior experience with internal organizing and leadership development, representation and bargaining.
• Prior experience with organizing community and elected leaders to support organizing drives.
• Fluency in Spanish or Tagalog a plus.
• Must have car and insurance. Car allowance provided.
