GLOBAL WORKER’S RIGHTS WRITER/RESEARCHER
TITLE: Global Worker’s Rights Writer/Researcher

DURATION: Temporary – One (1) Year
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The purpose of the AFL-CIO Global Workers’ Rights Writer/Researcher includes the following:
• To promote global workers’ rights priorities and programs of the AFL-CIO;
• To research and report about the issues, concerns, advances and changes in international workers’ rights situations to internal and external audiences;
• To support International Department programs through writing, editing, analysis, and providing logistical support as needed.
The fellow position is a full-time, one year opportunity to gain experience with the global labor movement while developing specific research, writing, and analytical skills in the area of global workers’ rights.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
• Assisting the Director, and International Department staff with legal cases, including gathering and organizing facts for cases;
• Conducting research on global workers’ rights issues;
• Monitoring changes in international workers’ rights issues and creating communication and social media materials;
• Drafting language for the AFL-CIO website and blog;
• Writing reports and summaries on issues relevant to the work of the Department;
• Helping to plan and implement conferences and events.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Effective researcher and writer with three to four years of previous experience including demonstrated experience working on legal briefs, memoranda, and United States agency filings;
• Bachelor’s Degree in international relations or similar subject required; Master’s Degree or Juris Doctorate preferred;
• Previous experience with international organizations and issues required;
• Sensitivity to other cultures and a desire to learn more about international workers’ rights issues;
• Excellent computer skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office;
• Strong working knowledge, and experience with, web-based research;
• Demonstrated superior writing and messaging sills – writing sample required.
• Demonstrated ability to adjust tone and arguments for a variety of audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to assess political issues and identify relevant information for a labor political program.
• Knowledge of the workings of the labor movement.
• Effective time management sills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects, including demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals.
• Demonstrated ability to adjust tone to a variety of audiences and the ability to communicate in a language other than English strongly preferred;
• Well-organized with a strong attention to detail.
DURATION:
• Temporary, one-year position.
