Communications Specialist I
Change to Win is hiring a communications specialist for its Justice for Port Drivers campaign to work in the campaign’s Long Beach office. This campaign is a joint project of Change to Win and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, as well as LAANE.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Director of Strategic Communications, the Communications Specialist will help run a strong communications program to support driver organizing and related activities, including but not limited to community and faith-based relations and political action. The Communications Specialist will work out of the Long Beach campaign office with some travel to assist with port campaigns throughout the country.
The ideal candidate for the Communications Specialist position has work experience with other labor, progressive, nonprofit organizations, political organizations, and/or media; understands the goals and mission of Change to Win and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters; has a demonstrated, broad knowledge of websites, social networking, email, and blogging that he or she can seamlessly apply to worker organizing; and has excellent writing skills.
Critically, the ideal candidate is passionate about improving the lives of low wage workers, enjoys working in a team environment with long and indeterminate hours, and is willing to “do what it takes” to reach our goal.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Works with communications team to provide campaign support including messaging, communications plans, timely materials, website copy, etc., integrating seamlessly with organizing, research, and community/faith teams at the direction of the Director of Strategic Communications.
• Provides support, planning, and strategy for communications projects.
• Assists with media relations, including monitoring media reports, writing press releases, and contacting reporters.
• Writes and edits regular leaflets, newsletters, and other communiqués. Assists with design as necessary.
• Monitors websites for regular consistent content and regularly contributes content to website, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
• Monitors and implements email and text messaging program.
• Enhances and expands online capacity of the campaign.
SKILLS:
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and confidence in writing abilities.
• One or more years in campaign communications, labor communications, public affairs, community organizing, journalism or other related experience.
• Familiarity with campaign communications and organizing.
• Ability to work both independently and effectively as part of a team under limited direction and balance conflicting demands.
• Interest in becoming part of a robust and enthusiastic campaign team.
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends on occasion.
• Ability to work under pressure; must be well-organized and self-motivated.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and discern priorities.
• Ability to make effective use of resources available to the campaign.
• Dedication to improving the position of working people and strengthening the role of organized labor through public actions, community relations, and legislative and political activity.
• Ability to work effectively with workers and staff from diverse ethnic, social, and economic groups.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Qualified applicants must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.
• Special consideration will be given to bilingual candidates.
