JOB OPENING:  Full-time Organizers and Lead Organizers

Join the fight for quality public education for our students, our democracy, and our communities. AFT is seeking full-time Organizers and Lead Organizers ready to take on the fight to strengthen the voice of educators and our schools. Public schools are under attack and the voices of educators are being silenced. Educators need dedicated organizers willing to fight for workplace rights, public education, and strong communities.

AFT seeks organizers and lead organizers, of all experience levels, that have a strong commitment to organizing for social, economic and educational justice.

AFT is leading innovative campaigns to bring a united voice of educational employees in multiple states. These positions are permanent positions in these locations. Positions are with state federations, locals, and nationally sponsored organizing campaigns.

This job requires long and irregular hours, some weekend work, and travel.

QUALIFICATIONS for ORGANIZER APPLICANTS:

• Willing to work long and irregular hours
• Dedication to social and economic justice and public education
• Possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
• Ability to work with individuals different from one’s self
• Some experience in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus for organizer position
• Bilingual, especially Spanish/English, is a plus

We provide rigorous on-the-job training on how to:

•  Educate workers and build support for the union.
• Conduct successful organizing conversations—in a range of situations—and neutralize employer misinformation.
• Overcome the challenges you will face in the organizing process.
• Work as a vital member of an organizing team that helps build unions that fight for quality public education and social and economic justice.
• Plan and lead an effective organizing drive.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Organize and mobilize workers
• Attend daily and weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
• Make appointments for site/school visits, one-on-one visits, and other interaction with members and potential members
• Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a weekly basis
• Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required for short periods of time
• Take direction a  Lead Organizer on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT membership and/or support


QUALIFICATIONS FOR LEAD ORGANIZER APPLICANTS:
• Strong commitment to the labor movement and social, economic, and educational justice
• Knowledge of labor laws
• Excellent skills as an organizer that’s been demonstrated in past campaigns
• Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate workers and staff
• Demonstrated ability to work independently to achieve goals
• Demonstrated ability to use a high level of judgment
• Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse people
• Demonstrated ability to supervise staff
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate staff’s strengths and weaknesses
• Ability to write and conduct trainings for member leaders and staff organizers
• Lead organizing experience is strongly preferred
• Strong spoken and written English and Spanish-language skills are beneficial for some positions
• Computer literacy is required
• Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required
