
National Organizer
A vacancy exists for the position of National Organizer in the Membership and Organization Department, effective immediately. This position is available for the following locations: Washington, DC, North Carolina, and Nebraska and/or Iowa. The National Organizer position is affiliated with our Membership and Organization Department, which provides central direction and control over efforts to increase and maintain AFGE membership at the highest possible level. The qualified individual will be primarily responsible for building AFGE membership, as well as prepare organizational and informational literature, represent the Federation at certain FLRA hearings and all related follow-up, including post-hearing briefs, leading in conduct of recruitment drives, providing leadership in conducting drives for unit consolidations, mergers or activity-wide national executives; and providing expert consultation on matters involving unit petitions, election procedures, and other issues related to organizing labor unions in the public sector.
Responsibilities
Qualified individuals of this position will serve as National Organizer with full responsibility and authority for implementing organization objectives, plans, policies, and procedures in a designated geographic area or agency. The following examples are typical of the duties performed. Duties include but are not limited to:
• National Organizer will provide technical assistance on to questions concerning representation and serve as a liaison between field staff, locals, and headquarters.
• National Organizer will coordinate logistics for recruitment and representation campaigns; monitor related campaign correspondence; represent AFGE at major representation hearings and pre-hearing conferences before the FLRA; research representing case law; brief writing; and maintain AFGE certification archives.
• National Organizer will plan, organize, direct, control, provide guidance and coordinate organization drives to form or expand AFGE units, including: supervising, motivating, and training committee members, groups, and other officials in the techniques for organizing public sector employees.
• National Organizer will be responsible for searching AFGE files and records for background and certificates of representation for national consolidated units, national exclusive recognitions and for other bargaining units represented by the AFGE.
• National Organizer will work with Membership and Organization team to review data retrieved and makes recommendations to the Director with regards to the next action to be taken.
Qualifications:
Applicants for this position must possess a bachelor’s degree from a college or university in such fields as English, Psychology, Sociology, Education, Public or Business Administration, or three (3) years specialized experience. Applicants must be a citizen of the United States, and have a valid driver’s license. In addition the candidate must have the following skills:
• Extensive experience in recruiting
• Expert knowledge of FLRA regulations
• Extensive experience in labor management relations
• Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing
• Ability to plan and control organizing program objectives
• Display strong interest in the American labor movement
