The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is our country’s fastest growing labor union with more than 2 million members. We are on the cutting edge of bettering the lives of low-wage service workers and taking on the larger impact their lives from healthcare to education to immigration.

The United Service Workers West (USWW) is comprised of 40,000 property service workers from San Diego to Sacramento. Our union brings together janitors, security officers, residential, stadium, arena, and airport workers. These workers are the heart of our union and through their activism the hope for a more progressive California.

SEIU USWW has a Communications Coordinator position available in our Northern California offices, either based in Oakland or San Jose. The position supports the work of the organization throughout all of Northern California.

Job Description
Our union is dedicated to changing the lives of working people through building a more just and humane society. To achieve this goal, we must change the way the public sees immigrants, people of color, and their unions.

The Communications Coordinator will work with a campaign team comprised of organizing, political, and research staff to develop messages and write and design campaign materials from flyers, to brochures, to social media. The Coordinator will supervise the work of one other Communicator. This person will be expected to work closely with our members and to develop ongoing relationships with the media.

Qualifications

  • Proven commitment to social and economic justice and improving the lives of working people.
  • Experience developing an effective public, media and internal communications plan for a policy campaign or organizing campaign.
  • Experience as a communicator for a membership based organization.
  • Experience developing effective social media campaigns.
  • Previous experience supervising staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high self-motivation
  • Ability to juggle multiple assignments, meet tight deadlines, and work in a team environment
  • Lay-out and design skills; experience taking photos; shooting and editing video a big plus.
  • Ability to speak Spanish a big plus.
  • Must have a car and valid insurance. Car allowance provided.
