BILINGUAL LEAD COMMUNITY ORGANIZER – San Antonio, TX
With offices in Harris, Dallas, San Antonio and Hidalgo Counties, the Texas Organizing Project (www.organizetexas.org) works to improve the lives of low to moderate income Texans by building power through community and electoral organizing.
Our organizing efforts are anchored by dues paying members and a base of leaders from the community committed to fighting for improved conditions for their families and their communities – quality schools, access to health care, livable housing, safe neighborhoods, living wage jobs and electoral change.For more than three years, TOP has been running and winning campaigns that address these issues. Our goal is to change the tide in Texas by building power for low and moderate-income families, engaging these communities in taking power for themselves through year-round community and electoral organizing while building key strategic partnerships with other progressive organizations and labor unions to make systemic change.
Job Description: TOP is currently expanding its operations into San Antonio and Bexar County and is seeking an experienced organizer to lead our campaign and organizing efforts. Under the supervision of the TOP Regional Field Director, the lead organizer will be responsible for building a community led membership base in target neighborhoods – developing grassroots leaders and establishing local organizing committees to identify priority organizing issues and develop campaign strategies to bring wins for the local community. The lead organizer will also be responsible for developing and running organizing and electoral campaigns as well as building and strengthening partnerships on the ground with other organizations and community stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
• Working with the Regional Field Director, develop and implement comprehensive strategy to advance campaign goals
• Build a community led membership base
• Identify and develop grassroots leaders through ongoing training
• Develop and maintain relationships with community groups and leaders, organizations, and elected officials
• Ability to manage and run effective Get-Out-the-Vote efforts - identify, recruit, train, and manage paid canvass teams for field programs; Coordinate volunteer block walks and phone banks.
• Planning logistics for community events, press conferences, and town halls
• Conduct grassroots lobbying activities - petition drives, letter writing campaigns, meetings with elected officials
Qualifications:
• A minimum of 2 years community or labor organizing experience
• Commitment to social justice
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
• Ability to motivate, organize, lead volunteers
•Fluency in English and Spanish
• Ability to build and maintain partnerships with other organizations and work effectively in coalitions
• Self starter who works well with minimal supervision.
• Flexibility to work long and often irregular hours, evenings, and weekends
• Experience supervising staff a plus
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and vehicle
