FIELD AUDITOR I (2 Positions)

FINANCIAL SERVICES - AUDITING DEPARTMENT

Salary starts at:  $65,902

 

This position provides assistance with financial and auditing services to all affiliates as well as assistance to field auditors and management at AFSCME's headquarters offices.

 

DUTIES:  Responds to inquiries from affiliates requesting assistance or information on a number of accounting and financial matters.  Provides information on routine matters by phone wherever possible.  May assist with special short-term projects dealing with Financial Services’ departmental operations.  These may involve internal audits of various activities to ensure proper compliance with established procedures. Coordinates the annual assembling and compilation of the Surety Bond Report and the Local Union Annual Financial Report, (LUAFR). Audits surety bond and affiliate annual financial reports and generates letters with recommendations for corrective action. Prepares delinquency listings for affiliates that have not submitted surety bond and affiliate financial reports. Processes bonding claims on behalf of affiliates that have experienced covered losses.  Coordinates the claims with the affiliate and the bonding agent from initial notice until claim is closed. As requested conducts field audits of affiliates which consist of a review of revenue and expenses to ensure that financial activities are in compliance with the AFSCME Constitution and Financial Standards Code.  Prepares financial reports on findings and recommendations. May coordinate the annual informational mailing to affiliates apprising them of current IRS filing requirements of IRS Forms 990/990-EZ/990-N. May assist affiliates with questions from the Internal Revenue Service and/or the Department of Labor. Assists in the implementation of International sponsored accounting and administrative programs which convert manual systems to automated systems. As requested, conducts training courses to instruct affiliate secretary-treasurers in how to set-up maintain and monitor local union financial record keeping.  Makes slight modifications in course materials to provide appropriate examples and illustrations for target audience. May assist other field auditing staff in their review of affiliate financial records.  This includes reviewing the accounting procedures and records, noting discrepancies and summarizing these for the field auditor's review. May participate in high priority projects related to accounting, pensions, conventions, organizing campaigns or others that further the mission of the International Union. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS:  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in accounting and auditing and three (3) to five (5) years work experience in an auditing or accounting, or any equivalent combination of education and experience in an environment performing tasks which provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge of forensic auditing and accounting practices and principles, and appropriate reporting requirements of financial statements. Ability to collect, analyze and compare financial data and identify data anomalies. Ability to conduct research and make logical, reliable, and sound financial conclusion and to make appropriate auditing judgments.  Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and complete assignments under pressure to meet tight schedules.  Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite with a concentration in Excel.  Ability to use databases and financial application software.  Strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.  Knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation to proofread and compose correspondence. Extended hours and travel may be required
