Support Airport Worker Organizing at LAX


Job Description

The Service Employees International Union is the nation’s fastest growing labor organization with over 2 million members. SEIU is on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage and immigrant workers and engaging in larger social issues such as health care, housing, and immigration.

 

The Property Services Division of SEIU is home to the Airport Workers United, Justice for Janitors and Stand for Security campaigns, as well as campaigns to organize workers in hospitals, universities, supermarkets, stadiums & more. These campaigns are all part of exciting national drives to empower workers to organize and improve conditions as well as win better pay, health insurance, and full-time work.
 

The Airport Workers campaign at LAX is a flagship campaign in SEIU’s national, ground-breaking initiative to organize tens of thousands of contracted airport workers in our nation’s largest metropolitan airports. SEIU USWW has a senior field organizing position available immediately, based in Los Angeles.

Airport workers are leading the way in the fight to make LAX an engine for prosperity for airport workers, their families and the surrounding South LA community. The Senior Organizer will lead and develop a team of staff in the Airport Workers United campaign, reporting to the Airports Division Director. Unionized workers at LAX include contracted passenger service workers such as wheelchair assistants, skycaps, cabin cleaners and security officers. The workforce is racially diverse and includes not only many long time LA residents but also many new immigrants. This position will focus on leading a staff team to build an effective multi-racial, multilingual leadership structure, strong systems of representation and a culture of organizing at LAX.

Requirements
• Prior experience developing leadership programs and leading staff.
• Prior experience in handling employer relations and field representation with private sector workers.
• Ability to develop and execute member leadership & steward trainings
• Experience and confidence to lead and develop diverse team of organizers.
• Fluency in Spanish or Tagalog a plus.
• Must have car and insurance. Car allowance provided.
