Web Communications Specialist
 

Job Description 

Position: Web Communications Specialist
Classification: Full-time, Exempt
Location: Oakland or Los Angeles

 

Position Summary:
The Web Communications works as part of a team to use web-based resources as a strategic organizational communications tool to support our organizing, contract negotiation and legislative goals. 


Responsibilities
1) Regularly update, maintain and improve UHW’s main website and some campaign websites.  This includes:
• Managing UHW website content and directs placement on the website 
• Redesigning websites utilizing best practices
• Developing and designing new campaign websites as needed
• Posting new content on a daily basis to maintain an evolving high profile web presence for our union
• Writing content for the web as needed
• Continually improving and enhancing site templates within web-based content management system (CMS)

2) Helping to develop a plan to launch a targeted and effective email marketing campaigns. This involves:
• Developing tools for keeping members informed of new site content and new developments
• Developing creative strategies to grow our list of member emails
• Managing data within web-based messaging and advocacy center (Convio), including imports, exports, data structure functions
• Developing and coordinating online advocacy campaigns with a team 
• Initiating advocacy emails, tracking and analyzing their effectiveness

3) Integrating social networking elements to engage our members online
• Helping to increase the use of social media, including Facebook and Twitter, to reach targeted audiences of union members and stakeholders

4) Tracking and monitoring online media. This includes:
• Providing recommendations based on usage and geared toward increasing online usage
• Regularly providing web statistics including preparing periodic reports, analyzing data and implementing site changes to improve user experience
• Monitoring UHW and web/online communications trends
• Assisting in creating a seamless content flow between UHW’s print publications and websites

5) Other duties as assigned, which may include:
•   Training members to help bridge the digital divide.  Trainings may focus on web fundamentals and       trends and writing for the web, including blogging.
• Opening and routing to appropriate staff emails coming into general organizational accounts
• Working with vendors as needed

 

Qualifications
• At least 2 years experience in web design
• Advanced knowledge of HTML, familiarity with JavaScript, CSS, Flash, Dreamweaver
• Experience with Convio/GetActive or a comparable email marketing tool
• Experience with site redesign
• Able to manage hosting control panel and register/maintain domain names
• Experience creating and delivering multimedia content
• Excellent writing and design skills
• Team player who’s comfortable in a shared work environment
• Ability to work well with a team under the pressure of tight deadlines
• A commitment to social justice
• Prior union or non-profit organization experience

Physical Requirements
• Able to sit at the computer for up to two hours at a time
• Able to bend, sit, stand and stoop
• Able to lift up to ten pounds
