STAFF REPRESENTATIVE
RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as Council advisor to assigned locals, including: attend all membership meetings and executive board meetings as appropriate; attend county/city meetings and hearings; effectively handle higher level grievances and arbitrations for the local; act as chief negotiator for assigned locals; file appropriate documents on behalf of local/Council; draft contract language, legislation and correspondence. Assist local in plan to organize the unorganized employees in their local; provide training for local officers and stewards as necessary; participate in both internal and external local and or Council organizing drivers; attend AFL-CIO central labor council meetings and other AFL-CIO meetings as assigned; and other duties as assigned
Staff Representatives are responsible for establishing coalitions within counties, or cities with the purpose of empowering the local and Council on worker, political and other related issues. Responsible to lobby any legislation required by the local and Council at the city, county or state level.
Representative must assure that each local follows local, council and international constitutions, including election dates, election procedures, and the financial standards code; and is responsible for reporting such information to the Council. Employee is required to attend monthly staff meetings and complete all required reports on a timely basis. Must be able to set own schedule, have good work ethics, be a self starter and must have an ability to multi-task. This is a salaried position, although some evening and weekend work is required.
REQUIREMENTS
Degree in labor studies or equivalent work experience as union representative required, with minimum of high school or GED. Knowledge of public employee labor laws, experience in organizing, grievance arbitrations, and negotiations a must. Employee must have automobile and valid driver's license.
