Desert Desert

"Gobi Desert" means..."Desert Desert." When Swedish explorer Sven Hedin asked the native Mongols what they called the arid area around them, they answered, "Govi," which means "desert" in Mongolian. Mongolian speakers being rare outside of their native country, the rest of the world quickly accepted Hedin's report that the area he'd visited was the Gobi Desert.
