Expensive Caterpillars

Why is silk expensive? It takes about 1700 cocoons (about a pound of silk) to make one dress. To get those 1700 cocoons, you need about 125 pounds of mulberry leaves to feed to hungry caterpillars. Reeling the silk from the 1700 cocoons requires about 10 hours; weaving it requires even more time.
