Road Map

Reno, Nevada is further west (39°31N, 119°49W) than Los Angeles, California (34°03'N
118°15'W) .

Californians tend to ask, "Are you sure?" when they're told that inland Reno is further west than coastal Los Angeles. Take a look at a map, & you'll see that the coast of California "doglegs" above LA, putting San Francisco well to the west of Tinseltown. Imagine a straight line north from LA, & (assuming that you have the map with N on the top) you'll see Reno on the left, or west.
