Tales to Tails

SCPL Kids' Page

In January 2011, our new literacy program, Tales to Tails, will launch. Children can sign up for a private twenty-minute slot to read to an attentive certified therapy dog.

Research shows that children who have frequent reading experiences such as reading aloud become more eager, skilled readers. Studies also show that therapy dogs provide a comfortable, nonjudgmental environment for children to practice. Children enjoy choosing a book they think the dog might like and they become more confident the more they read.

Tales to Tails will launch at the Capitola Branch Library on Wednesday, January 19. Children can sign up for a reading slot that day from 3-4:30pm or sign up for a slot on Saturday, February 5 between 9:30am-10:30am. The program will continue on every Wednesday and every Saturday at the Capitola Branch. Children are encouraged to return to read to their doggy partners.

SCPL is working with the Furry Friends Therapy Dog Group, Therapy Dogs International, and Therapy Dogs Incorporated. If you have any questions or want to sign up for a slot for your child, please call Melanee Barash at 427-7706, ext. 7672.
