If it is May, it must be Everest
If you are going to climb Mt. Everest this is the month to do it. Actually, it takes three months to do the climb but most people reach the summit in May. Sir Edmund Hillary (New Zealand) and Tenzing Norgay (Nepal) were the first to reach the top on May 29, 1953. [Everest Firsts] At this very moment, Apa Sherpa is climbing the mountain for a record 19th time and he is hoping to reach the summit in mid-May. [Record Climb]
It usually takes a long time to climb down, too, but Jean-Marc Boivin (France) descended from the top to Camp II in 11 minutes in 1988 by paragliding.
