Death of Ledge Martin

Word has been received of the death of Ledge Martin which occurred yesterday in Fresno, where he has made his home for a number of years. Before going to Fresno Mr. Martin resided in Soquel where he will be well remembered by the residence there, as well as in this city. Nothing has yet been received as to the nature of the death of Mr. Martin, save but the brief announcement that he had passed away. It will be remembered that his son "Leggie" figured in the Geo. Hines poisoning case not long since, and "squealed" on his younger cousins, the Hines boys, who were acquitted by a jury.

The remains of Ledge Martin will arrive at Soquel this evening from Fresno, and the funeral will be held tomorrow from that place.

On Nov 12, 1864 Ledyard Martin enlisted in Co. A of the 8th California Infantry in Watsonville. He was initially assigned to training and guard duty and Ft. Point in San Francisco and subsequently moved with the regiment to the Oregon Coast. The prime objective of the unit was the containment of local Indians, protection against the threat of Confederate sea raiding expeditions, the maintaining of local law and order, and as time went along, the apprehension of deserters from their own regiment. The unit returned to Ft. Point and was mustered out of federal service October 24, 1865.
