The house located at 924 Third Street, on Beach Hill in Santa Cruz was originally known as Golden Gate Villa. It was built in 1891 for Major Frank W. McLaughlin. The Major's wife died on November 16, 1905. In 1907, on the second anniversary of his wife's death, the Major shot his step-daughter Agnes and then committed suicide by drinking cyanide. The house changed owners several times and at some point, the house became known as Palais Monte Carlo. Newspaper articles and books do not explain the source of the name. In 1967, Patricia Sambuck Wilkinson acquired the house and it became known as Patty's Palace. She restored it with great care and the mansion was awarded the California Heritage Council's Certificate of Recognition.
