Uncovering the Hidden Job Market: Career Search Strategies using ReferenceUSA (12:30 PM-1:30 PM)

Attendees will learn how to use ReferenceUSA as part of their Career Searching Strategy. We'll cover the importance of having accurate information for applications and resumes, creating engaging cover letters, assembling a network of references and referrers, finding key persons at a business to act as mentors, building datasets of potential employers based on skill set, work history and preferences as well as how to prepare for interviews and interactions through thorough research. An Introduction to Researching the Great Wave of German Immigration 1830-1900 (1:00 PM-3:00 PM)
Location: Downtown Branch
The Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz County presents a lecture focusing on the great wave of German immigration from 1830 to 1900. Robert Jackson, PhD will outline the resources available to help narrow the search for your ancestors' places of origin. We'll also touch on the special challenges posed by the spelling of German surnames and place names and by the movable feast of German geography in the 19th century. Finally, we'll glance ahead to the main issues involved in accessing archives and records in Germany. Everyone is welcome to join us for this free event in the Downtown meeting room.

Reading in the Redwoods (6:00 PM-7:30 PM)
Location: Felton Branch
Reading in the Redwoods book group meets monthly at the Felton Library on the fourth Wednesday, reading contemporary books chosen by the members. Copies of each month's book are available at the Felton branch library. For more information call 427-7708 or drop by the branch. The branch is closed after 6 pm but the front door will be open. The LaSelva Beach Branch Library Friends will host a free poetry reading by Santa Cruz County Poet Laureate, David Swanger on Thursday, January 24 from 10:30-Noon. Dr. Swanger is a retired UCSC Professor of Education and Creative Writing. He will be reading his poetry, talking about his creative process, and answering questions. All are welcome. This event is sponsored by the LSB Friends and the Passionate Readers Book Discussion Group.
