Central Book Discussion Group
(1:00 PM-2:00 PM)
Location:
Central Branch
"The Blind Assassin" by Margaret Atwood will be discussed. The story starts with Iris's terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945. As we start Laura's story, Atwood introduces a novel-within-a novel. The novel is a science fiction story called "The Blind Assassin" and is told by two unnamed lovers who meet in dingy backstreet rooms. Family secrets, sibling rivalry, political chicanery and social unrest, promises and betrayals, "loss and regret and memory and yearning" are the themes of Atwood's brilliant novel. Despite subtle clues, the reader is more than halfway through Atwood's tour de force before it becomes clear that things are not what they seem.
