This presentation/performance is done in Civil War period dress. Five very important questions will be answered. Why did Jewish ancestors join in the Civil War? And what specifically did they do and contribute? What happened to these Civil War Veterans after the war ended? What can we do to honor those and all of our ancestors that served in the Civil War? And just why would any person who has been prejudiced all their lives subject themselves to a situation where they might find further prejudice and inability to conform to the dictates of their religion and diet? Our presenter, Richard Ferman, is a direct descendant of a disabled Civil War Veteran, AND a Revolutionary War Patriot. Richard Ferman is a past President (1981) and current Program Chair of the Santa Clara County Historical and Genealogical Society. He is currently Secretary for the United Veterans Council of Santa Clara County, Secretary/Treasurer of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and a member of Sons of the American Revolution hereditary society.

The Scotts Valley Library's popular "Art in the Library" program presents a new show starting on November 2. Featuring the work of seven local artists, "The Great Outdoors" showcases their interpretations of the physical natural world, with particular focus on plants and landscape images. The installation includes oil and acrylic paintings, photography, and live plant sculpture, and will run November 2 through January 25. Join us Saturday, November 9 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm for a reception hosted by Local State Farm Agent Laureen Yungmeyer -- come meet the artists and view their work. Refreshments will be served, and music will be provided by local musician jRj Rauche.

Jewelery making and weaving are just some of the crafts we will work on at the Garfield Park Library. Due to the nature of the crafts this program is limited to kids ages 10 to 18 years of age.

Trained therapy dogs will be available at the Library to be attentive, non-judgmental reading partners for children reading aloud. Children have individual 20-minute time slots to sit with a dog and read.

This hour-long session will cover all the basics of getting started with ReferenceUSA. The training will cover the Four Essentials anyone, particularly anyone new to ReferenceUSA, would want to know in order to be successful using the resource. This is also a great opportunity for current users to learn some new tips, tricks and techniques. Lots of time will be reserved at the end of the session for questions. Attendees will need an internet connection and a phone line to participate. Register for any of the session dates here.
