Genealogy Lecture Series: Onomastics – Using Naming Patterns in Genealogy
(1:00 PM-3:00 PM)
Location: Downtown Branch
Onomastics is the study of the origins and forms of proper names. Names were originally used to identify characteristics of a person. Over time some of those original meanings have been lost. In genealogy, knowing the naming patterns of a cultural or regional group can lead to breaking down brick walls. With guest speaker Martha Wallace, we will explore patronymics and matronymics in many languages and look at the naming patterns practiced by four different socio-religious groups in four areas of early American settlement.
