The Library makes ebooks, downloadable audiobooks, and streaming and downloadable music and videos available from a variety of sources. Access to these services from outside the library will require a library card and PIN.

Audiobooks & eBooks for Download


The hoopla digital collection

  • download or stream thousands of titles
  • smartphone, tablet, and computer compatible
  • check out movies and television for 3 days, music albums for 7 days, and audiobooks for 21 days
  • 10 titles per user per month

The hoopla app can be found in the iTunes App Store on your iOS device and in the Google Play store on your Android device. Search for "hoopla digital" to find and download the app.

The 3M Cloud Library collection
  • log in with your library card number and pin

  • transfer eBooks between devices -- even bookmarks will be saved
  • is compatible with PC, Mac, smart phones, iPad, and eReaders

The enki Library is a shared open source eBook Network that allows California libraries to own and store eBooks for access by library patrons. Content is currently focused on smaller and independent publishers. Use the "Advanced Search" option to see a list of available subjects.

eBooks Available Online


The American Physical Society is a non-profit organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics through its outstanding research journals, scientific meetings, and education, outreach, advocacy and international activities. These journals are now available online from inside the Santa Cruz Public Library Branches only. For a full list of journals, hover over the APS Journals menu item on the journal highlights page.


Outside the Library: BookFlix Access from Home
Scholastic BookFlix is an online literacy resource for children in grades PreK-3. It pairs classic video storybooks with related nonfiction eBooks (some in Spanish). It includes read-aloud supports so students can hear each book narrated and also hear definitions of key words. Specifically created to support non-, beginning and reluctant readers.


Collection updated as of April 2012! Includes e-books on the following topics: General Reference, Education, History, Nation and the World, Religion, Science, and Social Science.


A collection of online organizational encyclopedias from Gale, including the Encyclopedia of Associations and the National Directory of Nonprofit Organizations. Use the search box to look for a particular organization. You can see what directories are available for search by clicking the "View Titles" link under "Directories available in this library."


Safari offers about 4,000 technology, digital media, and business books online. Books include titles published by Adobe Press, For Dummies, Microsoft Press, O’Reilly Press, Peachpit Press, Visual, and Que.


TumbleBook Library is an online collection of TumbleBooks--animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you. Also included are games and puzzles. TumbleBooks are created in flash animation. You will need the Flash plug-in for your browser and a computer set up for sound. If you find that you are unable to view the TumbleBooks at home, you may need to download the free plug-in for Flash animations.

Magazines Available Online and for Download


Flipster is a next-generation digital magazine solution that makes it easy for you to read your favorite magazines on your computer or mobile device.
  • log in from the Library website with your library card number and pin
  • read magazines online in a web browser
  • use the Flipster app to download magazines for offline reading. On your mobile device, simply browse and view magazines through the Flipster link on the Library’s website. Select the “Open in App” option to download magazines to the app, where they can be read and managed offline.
The Flipster app is available through the iTunes store for the iPad and iPad Mini, and on the Google Play store for Android tablets.

Music Online: Listening Plus is a multidisciplinary collection of audiovisual content offering almost 70,000 albums. New titles are added every month.

Founded by filmmakers, IndieFlix is part champion, part curator. Inspired by independent filmmakers and the work they produce, IndieFlix created a platform for you to discover the best and quirkiest around. Films can be sorted by genre, rating, and length -- try it out and discover something new. Note: the films on IndieFlix are unrated; therefore users must be 18 or older. You'll need to create an account using your email address and library card number, and then create a separate Zinio account in order to access the collection.


With over 1,200 films, Medici.tv is the largest online catalog made up of classical music programs. It features the greatest artists and composers, and associates with great orchestras and concert halls around the world in order to broadcast live and free of charge some of the greatest musical events on the internet and its mobile applications.
