Doctors - License Verification, Certification, and Complaints

To Verify a Physician's License:

The Medical Board of California can provide information about whether a physician has had disciplinary action taken against them, whether their license is valid, and if they have been convicted of a felony. Use the Physician License Lookup tool or call them at (916)263-2382.

To verify the license of a Marriage and Family Therapist, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Licensed Educational Psychologist or other professional licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, use the License Verification tool. You may search by name, license number and/or location.

To Verify Physician Board Certification:

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) maintains a toll-free number (1-866-ASK-ABMS) for consumers to verify which doctors in a local area meet advanced, ABMS "board certification" standards and in which specialties. There is also an online Certification Verification tool which requires registration with the ABMS website.

To File a Complaint Against a Physician or Health Care Provider:

The Medical Board of California is responsible for investigating complaints and disciplining physicians who violate the law. California's Central Complaint Unit can be reached at 1-800-633-2322. Staff will provide information about filing your complaint and send a complaint form. The complaint form and mailing instructions are also available on the Medical Board's website.
