Free Credit Report
The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 allows consumers to request and obtain a free credit report once every twelve months from each of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
A free website, AnnualCreditReport.com, was set up by the three major credit reporting agencies to provide free access to annual credit reports.
The FTC warns consumers about using other "free credit report" or "free credit monitoring" sites. These are not part of the legally mandated free annual credit report program and often come with strings attached.
