Garfield Park Library is a small branch located on the west side of the City of Santa Cruz, in the area known as "The Circles." The second of four Carnegie libraries built in Santa Cruz, it opened in 1915. Today it serves all of the residents of its neighborhood, but its emphasis is on youth services.
In August 1995, the Garfield Park Branch Library received a grant from the California State Library that enabled the Santa Cruz Public Libraries to tailor this branch to the needs of young adults. A survey of young people who frequent this branch showed that 80 percent of them wanted computers to help with their information needs, and to help them work on homework.
The Electronic Homework Center opened in March 1996 and makes available word processing software, Internet access, SAT training programs, and educational games. In May 2000, the library received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to purchase four computers and a printer. The expanded eight station Homework Center opened in June 2000.
